He gave his life for Justice and Peace Flags deployed by the Boy Scouts of America in honor of Martin Luther King Day (January 15, 2018). Although there are many things that could be said about this great man, I choose to highlight the fact that Dr. King chose peaceful civil disobedience as his weapon to confront hatred. At a time of tremendous social unrest and violence in America, he did not embrace or resort to violence. Neither did he retreat from injustice, confronting it instead with courage and strength. His actions testify to his deep faith in God and in our country. He had faith that if he held up a mirror to Americans, and showed us that the reality of life for people of color in America fell far short of what the Constitution guaranteed, that our people and our governing process would fix the problem. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.
